CALIBAN RISING — surreal tanka sequence

10 May

Surreal tanka, published in “The Dreaming Room: Modern English Tanka in Collage and Montage Sets” (Modern English Tanka Press, Baltimore, 2007).

slant upward
from open windows
this cell
is brightly lit

six blank walls
the bluestones sing
echoes from the abyss
unconsolable shadows
lurk in the corners

each time I wake
my bed has moved again
in the dead of night
the cries of songbirds
come from below

a lover
soft, warm, wrapped round me
comforts me
and dispels my terrors
when I wake . . . or when I sleep

from a window
of my cell I can see
the rippling backs
of albatrosses
soaring high above the waves

the dead things
that I call into being
disappoint me
why do they always arrive
insolent, armed with mischief ?

where windows were
mirrors grew, from wall to wall
vacant bright faces—
nothing reflects in them
but other mirrors

outside my walls
I can hear the magma move
sinking or rising
at last we are on the way
the shadows flicker out

Incomplete Thots...

"As things are, and as fundamentally they must always be, poetry is not a career, but a mug's game. No honest poet can ever feel quite sure of the permanent value of what he has written: He may have wasted his time and messed up his life for nothing." T.S.Eliot
